The Southland

Greetings from the land of Waffle House, Jack in the Box, and gas shortages. That’s right I’m down south. Somewhere in North Carolina…I think. We’ve had 2 very busy and exhausting days. We left Pittsburgh on Monday at about 4- only a hour behind schedule, which is really good for us. We got to Parkersburg High School in West Virginia around 9, unloaded, and set up. Then we checked into our Red Roof Inn at about 1 AM. We were on the bus at 8:30 to go back to the school for a school assembly. We did one assembly in the morning, one in the afternoon and the show at night. Chase and I got into the truck at 12:05 and I was convinced that could not be the right time- it could not possibly be that late. He kept insisting it was, and sure enough he was right. I walked back into my hotel room 16 hours after I had left and didn’t have any down time in between. It was a long, but rewarding day.

I spoke at both school assemblies. I do a talk about the effectiveness (non-effectiveness) of condoms. The stat is that condoms fail 1 out of 6 times. As a visual, I get 6 volunteers, give 5 chocolate and 1 chocolate Exlax. The punchline is that I make everyone eat it except I stop the one with Exlax. Well, the kid I gave it to in the second assembly just popped it in his mouth. I didn’t even ask him to eat it! I asked him to unwrap it and he just ripped the wrapper off and ate it! I didn’t know what to do…I made him spit it out and admitted that no one had ever done that before.

We had less than 100 pre-registered for this show, but there ended up being about 450 there. I don’t know how many of them had been at the assemblies, but hopefully we convinced some to come back. We had 202 rings and 47 commitments. A long day, but definitely worth it!
